Wikipedia translation of the week: 2021-37
The winner this Translation of the week is
Please be bold and help translate this article! The Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award is named after South Korean Dr. Whang Youn Dai, who contracted polio at the age of three. She devoted her life to the development of paralympic sport in Korea and around the world. At the 1988 Paralympic Summer Games in Seoul, Korea, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) recognized her lifelong contributions to the Paralympic Movement and established the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award (formerly the Whang Youn Dai Overcome Prize). Since then, this award has been presented at every Paralympic Games to one male and one female athlete who each "best exemplify the spirit of the Games and inspire and excite the world". A bowl of strawberries for you!
Hi thanks for creating Liam Kelley (historian) which I’ve just reviewed. Thanks very much for creating this new article and happy editing! Mccapra (talk) 19:52, 15 September 2021 (UTC) |
- @Mccapra:, thanks for the digital strawberries, ironically if you didn't move the original to draftspace I probably wouldn't have expanded it so you are equally to thank for how much is added to the article. I just found it a shame that user "Laska666" added so little information, likely because this person is "an ideological enemy" of them as most of Kelley's work is actually against the Vietnamese nationalist historiography that the original creator loves to push. --Donald Trung (talk) 20:12, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
Translate Liam Kelley into Vietnamese
Liam Kelley (historian) is an impressive work. Have you thought of translating it into Vietnamese? Currently, as far as I know, there is no article about this historian in viwp. Ltn12345 (talk) 10:08, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Ltn12345:, for now I limit myself to Enwiki, I used to translate a lot of articles into Dutch in the past but stopped as I felt like I wasn't really adding anything and was catering only to a limited audience. The thing is that a lot of people read the English-language Wikipedia while fewer people read other language editions unless it's from cultures where English literacy is low (Vietnam included). I remember asking Dutch people about Wikipedia and almost all of them exclusively read the English-language edition claiming that the Belgophone one often just lacks information (partially due to a culture of "trimming"). The only reason I wrote the article about Liam Kelley was because user "Laska666" had done so, but was unwilling to actually do more than a single sentence stub that got draftified by another user. I still have a lot of projects that I want to complete and honestly found the current Liam Kelley article to be an unwelcome strain on my time. --Donald Trung (talk) 10:15, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
- If possible, I hope you can also expand Keith Taylor (historian). Taylor is probably one of the most famous Vietnamese studies scholars. Ltn12345 (talk) 10:19, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Ltn12345:, a lot has been written about Taylor... Unfortunately nobody with an interest in him has added it to "his" Wikipedia page. I would be willing to do so in the future, but just today I found this really interesting article that I want to add to Wikipedia, so the goal posts are ever moving further for me... --Donald Trung (talk) 11:08, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- 45 new Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. [1]
- A majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. The Growth team has published an FAQ page about the features. This translatable FAQ covers the description of the features, how to use them, how to change the configuration, and more.
Problems
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 14 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. [2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 September. It will be on all wikis from 16 September (calendar).
- Starting this week, Wikipedia in Italian will receive weekly software updates on Wednesdays. It used to receive the updates on Thursdays. Due to this change, bugs will be noticed and fixed sooner. [3]
- You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [4]
- The syntax highlight tool marks up code with different colours. It now can highlight 23 new code languages. Additionally,
golang
can now be used as an alias for the Go programming language, and a specialoutput
mode has been added to show a program's output. [5][6]

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Growth features are now deployed to almost all Wikipedias. For the majority of small Wikipedias, the features are only available for experienced users, to test the features and configure them. Features will be available for newcomers starting on 20 September 2021.
- MediaWiki had a feature that would highlight local links to short articles in a different style. Each user could pick the size at which "stubs" would be highlighted. This feature was very bad for performance, and following a consultation, has been removed. [8]
- A technical change was made to the MonoBook skin to allow for easier maintenance and upkeep. This has resulted in some minor changes to HTML that make MonoBook's HTML consistent with other skins. Efforts have been made to minimize the impact on editors, but please ping Jon (WMF) on wiki or in phabricator if any problems are reported.
Problems
- There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of an accidental restart of the search servers. [9]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 September. It will be on all wikis from 23 September (calendar).
- The meta=proofreadpage API has changed. The
piprop
parameter has been renamed toprpiprop
. API users should update their code to avoid unrecognized parameter warnings. Pywikibot users should upgrade to 6.6.0. [10]
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "Discussion tools" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. [11]
- The previously announced change to how you obtain tokens from the API has been delayed to September 21 because of an incompatibility with Pywikibot. Bot operators using Pywikibot can follow T291202 for progress on a fix, and should plan to upgrade to 6.6.1 when it is released.

This article has potential. I think you should nominate it to DYK so that it can appear on the Main Page. Băng Tỏa 16:54, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Băng Tỏa:, I am not allowed to do that (I had an emoji in my signature which got me blocked and as a part of my unblock conditions I'm only allowed to edit article, user, and category pages, the unblocking admin implied that he would never let me edit more as he ignores all my messages asking to have any (part of the) restrictions lifted). You are free to nominate it for DYK yourself but I'm not allowed to. Thank you for your improvements to it. --Donald Trung (talk) 17:31, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
@Băng Tỏa:, but if you were to nominate it you could write something like this:
"Liam C. Kelley is an American historian that operates an academic blog under his pseudonym "Lê Minh Khải" where he criticises the way how nationalism influences Vietnamese historiography."
Maybe it's a bit too verbose, but you get the point. --Donald Trung (talk) 18:22, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia translation of the week: 2021-39
The winner this Translation of the week is
Please be bold and help translate this article! Behavior-altering parasites are parasites with two or more hosts, capable of causing changes in the behavior of one of their hosts to enhance their transmission, sometimes directly affecting the hosts' decision-making and behavior control mechanisms. They do this by making the intermediate host, where they may reproduce asexually, more likely to be eaten by a predator at a higher trophic level which becomes the definitive host where the parasite reproduces sexually. Examples can be found in bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and animals. Parasites may also alter the host behaviour to increase the protection to the parasites or their offspring. The term bodyguard manipulation is used for such mechanisms. Among the behavioral changes caused by parasites is carelessness, making their hosts easier prey. The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, for example, infects small rodents and causes them to become careless and may even cause them to become attracted to the smell of feline urine, both of which increase their risk of predation and the parasite's chance of infecting a cat, its definitive host. (Please update the interwiki links on Wikidata of your language version of the article after each week's translation is finished so that all languages are linked to each other.)
